Hiking trails in the veldt and mountains
Many visitors will doubtless take the opportunity to follow one of our newly developed hiking trails. What better way to see, hear and be at one with nature in this wonderful corner of Africa. The experience will sharpen your senses and awaken your very soul.So perhaps meander through the classical African bush savannah on our Aloe trail. The Aloe family of succulents can be distinguished, if in flower, by the fact they always carry six petals. Known as leaf succulents due to their capacity to store water in the tissue of their often fleshy leaves, their stems will usually be slender. The medicinal properties of Aloes are well versed, and indeed many species are now protected. Our Aloe Trail will introduce you to several species and of course an abundance of other flora
An alternative, and rather longer hike, is to walk along the Game Camp Trail. Once again the route from your accommodation will lead you through typical Kalahari Desert vegetation. The walk will normally take some 4 hours, and like every trail is clearly marked with subtle arrows. Once at the wildlife camp you can make use of a hide adjacent to a waterhole from where you will have an excellent view of the animals as they come to drink. Another memorable experience.
Best of all; why not hike with (or without) a guide up into the nearby Karubeams mountains. The optimum time to do this is early morning; set off at dawn and you will witness a sunrise that will burn into your memory, a highlight indeed of your visit to Africa. Climb up rocky slopes whilst enjoying unsurpassed views stretching across the valleys and veldt. Perhaps enjoy a small picnic whilst atop the lofty mountain, with so much to take in all around you, just nature everywhere. Fauna enthusiasts will find a lot of tracks, and likely spot Giraffe, Kudu, Springbok and Oryx amongst others in the valleys below. Glorious.
Please note that to enjoy this particular trail, guests should have a modicum of fitness and be equipped with hiking boots and practical clothing. Experienced hikers may follow the marked paths alone and unguided if they prefer. And apart from taking along plenty of fluids, don’t forget your camera, binoculars and sunscreen. The latter applies to all our fabulous hikes!
